6 team building tips to motivate employees

Team building has become a bit of a dirty word in the workplace in recent years, conjuring up visions of raft building and forced fun.

But team building can play an important role in a company’s success, improving communication and promoting employees’ ability to work together by aiding interaction and cooperation. By building a strong team, employees will also feel a sense of belonging and loyalty to the business – who we work with plays a big part in how we feel about our jobs.

Team building can help motivate employees by providing opportunities to share their skills and abilities as well as learn other valuable skills from colleagues.

Activities don’t have to be expensive or complicated, you simply need to create structured opportunities to get employees together. This can take the form of a lunch, a day out or a meeting away from the office.

The unique challenge with fleet management is that employees are so often out on the road that team building activities are harder to organise. But with some forward planning and good communication, fleet drivers can work together to feel more of a team, even when they are many miles away.

Easy team building activities

  1. Lunch discussion and team building groups

Provide lunch for the whole company, a department or a work team and assign them to different groups, for example by asking employees to pull a number out a hat and dividing the groups into odds and evens. They can be given various work-related questions to discuss or you could introduce an icebreaker question (avoid making them too personal). Example icebreaker questions could include:

  • Can you share three things about you that you think no one here knows?
  • What part of your current job is your favourite?
  • Share one thing that you love to do that you get to do nearly every day?

 

 

  1. Provide group mentoring

One-on-one mentoring is important for employees, particularly with new recruits. This gives employees an opportunity to learn new skills and approaches while furthering their relationships with colleagues. Group mentoring can also play a useful team building role by getting an employee who has a particular skill set to teach other employees.

  1. Hold off-site departmental team building lunches

Departmental team building lunches, either at a restaurant or in the local park, are excellent team building activities. If you do venture to the park, organise games such as softball, football or cricket as sports participation works well for team building.

  1. Provide company-wide challenges

Organising a 5k run or walk bi-annually is a great way to encourage team building as well as promoting fitness and wellbeing. Support employees in organising training schedules that they can either do together or on their own time. With fleet drivers working challenging hours, help them stay motivated by forming a shared WhatsApp group where drivers can log their day’s training.

  1. Brown paper bag lunch meetings

Borrowed from the American custom of bringing sandwiches in a brown paper bag, these informal lunchtime meetings provide an opportunity for an employee meets with a group of employees to share information and experiences. Employees can take it in turn to speak to the group and can choose to talk about anything they’d like to share with their team, such as a hobby, interest, or particular knowledge or skill. The speakers are encouraged to make their sessions interactive to encourage team building.

  1. Encourage your employees to volunteer for charity as a group

Whether your employees are running for charity, organising cake sales or collecting for food banks, volunteering as a team is a team building activity that lasts. Helping others creates a strong, sustained camaraderie that can promote a sense of wellbeing. Research has shown that volunteering improves social well-being, a sense of feeling valued, more active lifestyles and better mental health[1].
